Revamping Our Network Infrastructure

Revamping Our Network Infrastructure:
Overcoming Challenges and Enhancing Efficiency

In today's fast-paced digital landscape, a robust and well-organized network infrastructure is crucial for businesses to thrive. However, our organization faced several challenges prior to undertaking a comprehensive network redesign project. This blog article highlights the obstacles we encountered, the solutions we implemented, and the remarkable improvements we achieved.

  • Redesigning the Network Topology:
One of the primary goals of our project was to revamp our network topology, which was previously disorganized and lacking proper documentation. The absence of clarity made it difficult to identify device connections and troubleshoot issues effectively. By implementing industry-accepted standards, we established a logical and organized framework. This redesign not only facilitates troubleshooting but also ensures future scalability and expansion opportunities.
  • Implementing Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN):
To enhance our network's performance, reliability, and utilization of multiple network paths, we decided to implement SD-WAN technology. SD-WAN offers numerous advantages, including optimized data transmission, improved resiliency, and uninterrupted connectivity. By dynamically selecting the most efficient and stable data transmission path, SD-WAN mitigates disruptions or congestion, ensuring seamless connectivity even during challenging network conditions.
  • Overcoming Cabling Challenges:
Recognizing the significance of well-organized cabling infrastructure, we undertook the task of completely redoing our server rack's cabling system. This meticulous effort involved organizing cables neatly, implementing proper cable management techniques, and adhering to industry best practices. The revamped cabling not only enhances the aesthetics of our server rack but also improves airflow, minimizes cable-related issues, and simplifies troubleshooting and maintenance tasks.

Challenges and Improvements with our Servers:

  • Enhancing Project Collaboration and Communication:
To boost productivity and efficiency, we implemented three Revit Servers, resulting in a remarkable improvement in the speed of our projects' central models. Additionally, the deployment of the 3CX VoIP system facilitated seamless communication within the organization. Furthermore, we configured two test web servers and one database server as a playground for our developers, fostering innovation and experimentation.
  • Strengthening System Security:
Recognizing the criticality of system security, we undertook a complete rework of our domain controllers and implemented Microsoft-recommended least privilege principles. These measures ensure a robust and secure infrastructure, protecting our valuable data and safeguarding against potential cyber threats.
  • Ensuring High Availability with Virtual Machines:
To guarantee uninterrupted operations, we reconfigured our virtual machines and implemented a two-node high availability server cluster. By leveraging teamed network interface cards (NICs) and connecting them to different switches, we achieved redundancy. This setup allows us to remain operational even in the event of up to two NIC failures, one switch failure, or one server failure. Our critical servers, including file servers, Revit servers, the 3CX VoIP system server, and domain controllers, continue to function seamlessly during such scenarios.

Through the comprehensive network redesign project, we successfully addressed the challenges we faced and significantly improved our network infrastructure. The restructuring of our network topology, implementation of SD-WAN, and meticulous cabling organization have enhanced efficiency, scalability, and troubleshooting capabilities. Simultaneously, our server enhancements, including the implementation of Revit Servers, the 3CX VoIP system, and high availability configurations, have elevated collaboration, communication, and system security. As a result, we now boast a more resilient and optimized network infrastructure that sets the foundation for our organization's future growth and success.
